Set in a beautiful
South Devon Valley near Honiton, the Wiscombe hill is the front drive to
the Chichester family home. The scene of national, regional, and single-marque
championships, the venue also plays host to historic cars and motorcycles.
The 1000 yard climb, now operated by a company of enthusiasts, has
everything a hillclimber needs to make the ascent a challenging one. A
sharp left-hander immediately after the start, leads on to Wis Straight,
which, while being anything but straight, has a 'yump' half way along,
where the faster cars can easily become airborne. Passing through The Gate,
competitors are met by a vicious series of s-bends - the spectators favourite
spot - followed by the first of two hairpin bends which are separated by
a very fast straight. While being unkind to the unwary, Wiscombe offers
more than its fair share of adrenaline to the successful.
At least once a year the valley echoes to the sound of F1 engines
when the National series makes its visit, while our own ASWMC (see
www.aswmc.org.uk) championship contenders use the course in April and
September. For many years each May the Aston Martin Owners Club used
to leave the circuits and bring their magnificent machinery to the Devon
hill. Add to that Historics, sports cars and the 500cc club and it can
be quickly seen that Wiscombe provides entertainment all season for all
tastes. |
